Why I Decided to Work for Myself

Sara Hudson

About 3 weeks ago, I made the biggest decision of my career. After spending my last 5 years working for a few big corporations and marketing agencies, I decided to choose a new path: my own. Working for yourself definitely is an appealing option, but to me, it was also a frightening decision.

As you might imagine, working for yourself requires a lot of organization, discipline and hard work as contracts come and go. Being one of the most type A personality women you will ever meet, I hesitated a few months before making the big jump. It might appear too soon to draw any conclusion, but as of now, I am incredibly happy with my career change and I have never been enjoying life as much as now!

Growing up, parents, teachers and advisers would always encourage us to work for big companies for the stability, the experience and the benefits – which I totally agree. Working as an intern at ALDO GROUP, as a bilingual copywriter and SEM specialist at Yellow Pages, and finally as a marketing manager in an agency gave me incredible experience and working skills. I learned so much in the past few years and I deeply cherish my experience. These past years are exactly why I am able to work for myself now. This and obviously the blog.

A few elements triggered my decision over the years to make the big switch. The most significant one was that I did not always feel that my colleagues’ and my work was always recognized. Professionally and monetary-wise. We would work countless hours, even overtime, without being thanked for our extra work. A small thank you does not demand too much effort and really makes such a difference. The second element was the lack of time spent and thus the quality given on each project. As you can see with my blog and my Instagram, I absolutely love spending time on my projects to make sure I deliver good content for my clients. Working with an infinite amount of clients in my past jobs made us rush into things, deliver average content and struggling to find time to fulfill our work.

Now, I am able to choose the projects I want to work on with the people I want to work with. I am extremely grateful to have the connections I currently have as I know not everybody can start their own business already being somewhat stable and secure. To give you a little bit of context, I used to take a few freelancing contracts here and there while I was working full-time. That allowed me to start building my connection circle. Little did I know that these people and the extra contracts I took after my full-time job would greatly help me today.

Working for oneself definitely has its up and downs. As there is so much to cover, I was thinking of doing another Q&A series focusing on freelancing. Please let me know if you would like to read more about how I gradually made the switch as I will be more than happy to share my experience!❤️
