The Shanghai Ballet graced the stage of Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier from February 18-21 with the presentation of Coppélia. This tale of romance and magic combines poetry and humour in a unique story that enchanted children and adults. Since its foundation in 1979, The Shanghai Ballet has impressed the world with the talent of its dancers. I was extremely happy and grateful to attend the Premiere of this ballet and I want to thank Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal for inviting me once more!
Pierre Lacotte’s choreographic adaptation of this classic ballet presents the story of Franz, the fiancée of Swanhilda, falling in love with Coppélia – a young woman he has seen through the window of Dr. Coppélius’ workshop. Under the influence of her own jealousy, Swanhilda breaks into the workshop to discover that Coppélia is not human, but a doll. She quickly hides behind Coppélia when Dr. Coppélius returns to the workshop, shortly followed by Franz with the intention of confessing his love to Coppélia.
Dr. Coppélius mischievously tricks Franz into sleeping and attempts to transfer Franz’s life into his darling invention. Swanhilda dresses herself as the doll and pretends to come to life. As Dr. Coppélius celebrates his success, he and Franz realized the mistake they have made. The plot ends with the wedding of the forgiven Franz and Swanhilda, and with the village’s celebration.
This 3 act ballet was gracefully presented by the 70 dancers. Their technical precision and their dainty athleticism were reflected in an enchanting execution. Pas de deux, pirouettes and grand jetté seduced the audience last Thursday night. Floating and graceful costumed combined with a marvellous and rich décor added to the magnificence of Coppélia. Guest conductor Oleski Baklan led the Grands Ballets Orchestra to give a flawless and breahtaking performance of Léo Desibes’ music.
The Ballet of Shanghai offered a loyal presentation of a pure classic ballet. Coppélia is a wonderful and enchanting tale pleasing the audience generation after generation.
