Acai Bowl

Acai bowls are invading the foodie industry. Not only are they pretty to look at, but they seem so incredibly delicious and healthy. And the best part is that they are very versatile – you can always switch or add your favourite toppings and fruits to have your own homemade and custom concoction. For today’s post, I decided to go with a very simple and classic recipe that includes strawberries, bananas, kiwis and mures. Have you tried this new foodie phenomenon yet? Let me know which acai bowl is your favourite!

AcaiBowlIngredients – for 2 bowls
2 cups of frozen strawberries
2 frozen sliced bananas
4 tablespoons of acai powder
1 cup of unsweetened almond milk
2 tablespoons of almond butter
3/4 tablespoon of honey

Toppings
Your favourite fresh fruits, sliced
Clear, runny honey
Granola (optional)
Unsweetened coconut flakes (optional)
Dried goji berries (optional)
Chia or hemp seeds (optional)

Steps
1. Put the frozen fruits, acai powder, almond milk, almond butter and honey in a blender. Blend until creamy and smooth, it should have the consistency of a frozen-yogurt (thicker than a smoothie).

2. Put the acai mixture into 2 bowls and top them with sliced fruit, a drizzle of honey and the toppings of your choice.

*For best results, use a high-powered blender like a Vitamix. The acai base is thicker than a smoothie, you may have more trouble blending it with a normal blender.

I recently had the BEST acai bowl in Maui at the Farmacy Bar. It was SO delicious!! The base was acai blended with macadamia nut milk, fresh aloe vera and sugar cane juice. The toppings were with granola, strawberries, bananas, blueberries, toasted mac nuts, goji berries and local Hawaiian honey. Amazing!

Oh wow it sounds so good! I’ll have to find a place here that does similar bowls or try to do it myself. It is amazing to see how versatile these acai bowls are, you can always discover new flavours and mix so many ingredients!

I love acai bowls! Your topping suggestions are great – I love the inclusion of the coconut! After having acai bowls in California, I was dying for one one when I got back to the Midwest. I’ve never seen the powder, but I did find acai puree at Whole Foods. I used that and yogurt along with frozen fruit to come up with my version. It’s on my blog if you want to take a peek. I love your reading your posts!

It is a fruit! It comes from Central and South American (mostly from Brazil) 🙂
